Becoming a Crystallographer

This is the blog of a future crystallographer, not that crystallography is the main area of discussion. I'll maybe mention it once in a while, while writing about my life and other things.

Third time's the charm

I was supposed to be in the organic lab only until noon on so doing this synthesis that has failed on the past two occasions. It was supposed to fail again. But no. Now I have to do it till the end or something because the thing finally worked. The point here being that if the thing fails three times, one doesn't have to do it any more and still gets the credits. And it always failed in the beginning and now I have like four more days of work on it. But oh well. It's not that bad really. I would have work to do too but I suppose that can wait a while. Though time's running out on me getting results and I do need some.

And Vappu is just around the corner again. The spring has gone really fast. Soon it will be summer and I'm off to Norway, possibly Germany before that and definitely to Ireland in just a few weeks. It's going to be quite busy. Me and the bnd also figured we would go to Ilosaarirock as some friends are going. Luckily the subject came up since I've always wanted to go and never have. I hope the weather will be nice. I've got to order some sunshine. :)

Otherwise I guess there's nothing special going on. Just working and climbing and hanging out with the bnd. Yesterday was funny since we wore the same fleece coats. Different colors, mind you, and kind of different since mine was loads newer. But still. Sort of scary wearing the same clothes as the bf. But I'm sure we looked way athletic together. ;) We were going climbing and it was loads of fun. We went up this one wall like three times in a row. The funnest part was that there was a group of beginners there and, boy, did we show them. :D

Back from Scotland

I had a great trip. I think last Friday was one of the best vacation days I've ever had. The weather was just totally excellent for the whole trip. It could only have been better had it been 5 degrees warmer. It didn't rain at all and that is really something considering I'm talking about Scotland. The sun was shining most of the time too. Other than the great weather I also had great company and saw grand landscapes, tasted nice whiskeys, learned how they are made and had tons of fish and chips. :) And even though I had to get up at half to six on Monday morning after maybe four hours of sleep, it was not so bad since it was all a part of something that was otherwise rather fantastic. I'll see if I can post some pictures once I've emptied out my camera.

Luckily I have tons of work this week so I got back to the working mood rather well. The nice weather in Jyväskylä is sort of bothering my working but it keeps me in a happy mood anyhow. I don't think I'm able to sulk much if it's sunny. I am a bit deprived of sleep still but that will be taken care of during the weekend. It is luckily Wednesday already so no big worries. I'm going climbing today with the bnd and we're going by bike since it's sunny and all. I'll leave a bit early right after I write this. I didn't really get much work done today but I have been busy otherwise. I blame having to go listen to a lecture though the lecture was quite interesting. Tomorrow I have to come to work earlier. I have tons of things to measure and I want to get them done this week. Most of them anyhow.

Going to Scotland

I'm off to Scotland on Thursday. It should be fun. Going to see the ex with this male friend of mine. It seems kind of weird when one considers that I do have a bf - the bnd. But I'm sure the people who know me don't think it all that weird. But yeah I'm excited about going there. I'll get to see castles and whiskey distilleries and just the grand scenery that they are supposed to have. We're renting a car and driving around, which I think is the best way to explore most places. Especially since the most interesting sights are not the cities but the stuff between them.

I've been really busy at work since last Thursday since I got these apparatuses to test for a week. I'm trying to do as many experiments as I can. I even came to work for a few hours on Saturday. And today I have to stay till six to get this sample off the apparatus. I came in a bit before eight too. I did, however, take a long lunch with friends so it's not all that bad. And now I have time to write in this blog of mine. But I'm hoping to get results with the apparatuses. I hope to get at least something.

I was sick last week and even stayed home last Monday. After that I should maybe have stayed home another day but I had work to do. As a result I missed climbing and a nice dinner with the bnd on Saturday but I am glad I'm getting better now. Don't want to be sick on my little holiday.

But now I've got to go and fill up a nitrogen tank. Liquid nitrogen. Cold stuff. I'm just beginning to sort of not be so afraid of the stuff. It is sort of scary since it's like really cold and it produces smoke. Uuuu.
