Becoming a Crystallographer

This is the blog of a future crystallographer, not that crystallography is the main area of discussion. I'll maybe mention it once in a while, while writing about my life and other things.

Friday at last

It's been a sort of weird week. I think I've just been weirded out by the fact that I'm actually at home and have to go to work. I mean I was up and about for the first three weeks of this month. I've almost gotten some work done. I have to admit to being a bit lazy but there have also been setbacks that I have no control over. Like if a crystal is not good then it just isn't good. OK so I can control the crystallization conditions somewhat but in the end there's not much I can do. But anyways.

I got up like on the wrong foot this morning. I slept badly because of this fly that kept flying right by my ear and landing on me in other places. It was really annoying. So I got like hardly any sleep after 4 am. Luckily, though, it's Friday. I get a few days off to get back my enthusiasm for work. I have nothing special or actually nothing but climbing planned for the weekend. This is certainly a case of "the calm before the storm" since all my weekends will henceforth be taken up by all sort of fun things like rock festivals. A few more weeks of work and I'll even have some vacation. Two weeks to be exact. I might spend a bit more than a weekend at the parents and go to three festivals but otherwise I've not planned anything. Though no use planning since I've only got like a few days that haven't got anything on them. Hopefully though I won't feel too busy.

But now I'm off to have a nice weekend. Hope you have one too.

A bit about the trip to Norway

Uh oh, I'm back at work. Not really feeling like working but I have to get things done. I've mostly been cleaning up the lab today so I can start doing a bunch of experiments tomorrow. Right now I'm sort of waiting for a phone call to discuss what I'm going to be doing tomorrow. Not that I don't know but just to be sure and stuff.

I came back from Norway on Sunday. Me and the bnd spent a night in Turku since there were no more trains to get home on. It was also nice to have a little pause from traveling since we'd been traveling since Saturday afternoon. Firstly like 14 hours on a bus and then another 12 on a boat. As much as I was fearing the trips to Norway and back, they turned out to go quite well. I was a bit afraid that I would not be able to sleep at all and that would cause me to take it out on the bnd but nothing like that happened. Ok, so I did not get much sleep on the bus but I did get to spend hours and hours right next to a cute guy. We were being way cute and "in luuv". I think we may have annoyed some other people with our continuous cuteness. I mean I would have gotten sort of annoyed had it not been me. :D But I can't help it if I can have fun with the bnd even on a bus in the middle of the night after like no sleep. On pauses during the way I jumped up on his back for piggyback rides. ("Reppuselkään!") Well we had to get some exercise.

The actual destination was great. The views were fantastic and we were housed in a cabin with a sauna. There were 10 other people in the cabin but we got along well. No problems really. They were mostly like the same age and such. In the bus I was a bit afraid we might get housed with the tons of teenagers that were on the trip but luckily that did not happen. We had a view of a lake from the cabin windows and on the other side there were like snow covered peaks. We went for a walk up the hill/mountain one day to see this waterfall. It was quite nice. There were waterfalls like everywhere with the snow on the peaks melting and coming down the sides of the mountains in streams. Then one day we rented a rowboat and took a little trip on the lake. I also did some rowing. ;) One day we took a trip to a beach where we were supposed to try surfing but there were like no waves so we didn't even get into the water. The water was also quite cold. Mostly of course we were off skiing/snowboarding.

The first day we had great weather. The sun was shining and it was almost too warm. The only problem was that we had just spent the night on a bus. It all felt a bit surreal. Other days the weather was not so great but we did go out every day. The last day was like the worst with it raining on the bottom of the slope and snowing on top. I'm glad I had good Goretex clothing since otherwise I would have been soaking wet. Of course I was soaking wet on the outside but not on the inside of my clothing. People were joking about using the wet suits that they used while surfing for skiing. The weather was so bad it was even really humorous in the end. And the rain wasn't the worst since it was also foggy. Sometimes it felt like I couldn't see anything. Ok so we did spend most of the last day in the cafe since I was also a bit tired from snowboarding the last four days.

Right now my left knee is sort of aching and my neck is still a bit stiff from making this one bad landing from a jump but otherwise everything is grand. Except of course that I have to get back to work. Luckily the day is almost over and I get to measure some crystals tomorrow.
